Mapleton Picnic 1942 Puzzle 500 piece 13″ x 19″
That year the ceremonies from the hay wagon were more solemn. The preacher’s prayer was longer and contained pleadings for our boys in service and for our beleaguered country. Then a local politician gave a short loud speech, stressing patriotism and hard work. He got only lukewarm applause. Then a small boy, maybe eight years old, stepped to the front of the wagon and sang, a capella, a popular song of the time “There’s a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere”. He sang to a group of suddenly silent people. Nobody moved. Most of us had tears running down our cheeks. (I am crying as I write this, more than fifty years later. As he finished, there was a short, very silent moment and then thunderous applause, or as thunderous as the small community could make it.
